CIEMADeS is an international organization created as cooperation between three Islands from the Caribbean Basin, Dominican Republic, Haiti and Puerto Rico. The purpose of this organization is to contribute to the protection and management of the Environment and the Sustainable Development of the Islands of the Caribbean Basin through educational and scientific activities related to environmental affairs.

CIEMADeS Participants
This organization is the product of the initiative to institutions in Puerto Rico, Haiti and the Dominican Republic, which have been incorporated into universities, government agencies and NGOs related to environmental issues and responsible for its management.

Topics
Among the main issues to focus attention CIEMADeS include: environmental education, pollution, biodiversity, climate change, natural resource management, air quality, soil, water and ecosystem restoration and conservation.

A forum to share experiences
One of CIEMADeS important objective is to serve as a forum for debate were member institutions can share experiences, initiatives, and resources related to environment and sustainable development. This forum will promote that Island on development process, incorporates on their strategies, successful practices for environmental situations from similar Islands. Is our intention that this collaboration between our members could be extended to other Island of the Caribbean Basin that have a similar environmental profile of the founding Islands CIEMADeS organization.

Four vectors of action
CIEMADeS is directed toward the development of four goals or main vectors:

(1) Environmental Leadership Development
It emphasizes the preparation of government officials and community leaders through trainings and courses of different types and duration, including formal studies at postgraduate level.
(2) Scientific Research
Proposes the development of research projects of regional interest which share human resources and scientific infrastructure of organizations and countries.
(3) Social Environmental Awareness
Facilitates citizen participation at all levels in matters related to the environment.
(4) Sustainable Development
Promotes educational activities related to sustainable development aimed at both the general public and private sector leaders and government officials. It covers the preparation of educators as agents that bring about a multiplier effect of awareness and environmental education in communities.

The Annual Conference
CIEMADeS is committed to make annual international conference that promotes the exchange among member organizations and other stakeholders. It discusses the results of initiatives or projects social, political, economic, scientific and related academic environment. In addition, this conference serves as a forum to strengthen partnerships between different levels of participants.The conference includes an assembly of CIEMADeS members.
